BRIEF: Wednesday forecast: Heavy wet snow, 4 to 8 inches possible

Feb. 24--Weather officials expect wet, heavy snow to hit the Chicago area on Wednesday, when winds between 40 and 50 mph will create near blizzard conditions in open areas as well as huge waves on Lake Michigan causing lakeshore flooding.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning Tuesday afternoon for Cook and Will counties. A revised snow forecast map issued late Tuesday increased the expected snowfall totals for most areas from a map issued earlier in the day.

Hardest hit areas should be from the city south into east-central Illinois and east across northwest Indiana, where snowfall totals could range from 8-12 inches. The city proper could get amounts in the 4- to 8-inch range with totals quickly tapering off to the west with little if any accumulation expected in the Interstate 39 corridor, according to WGN's Tom Skilling.

The storm should ease by Thursday morning.

The high Tuesday night will be about 34 degrees. Wednesday's highs are expected to reach about 37, dropping to 29 in the night hours.
