BRIEF: Weather conditions suspend recovery of boy, 17, from Diversey Harbor

Feb. 26--Rough weather caused divers to suspend the search for a 17-year-old boy believed to have been swept into Diversey Harbor by a high wave Thursday morning.

The divers were called around 11:40 a.m. after the teen was seen falling into Lake Michigan, police said.

The teen was with a friend and was walking on a concrete pier when a wave hit and he was swept into the water, said Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

At least four divers searched for the boy in the water, Langford said. He said there was zero visibility in the water and the temperature of the lake was 33 degrees. Officials said he may have been from the western suburbs.

About 1 p.m., officials suspended the search because of weather conditions and high waves, officials said.

Officials believe the boy could not have survived and are treating it as a recovery operation, rather than a rescue.
