Jan. 13--The World Boxing Council has designated the Jan. 23 Danny Garcia-Robert Guerrero fight at Staples Center the bout for the world-title belt left vacant by retired Floyd Mayweather Jr.
England's Amir Khan was selected the mandatory challenger.
The unbeaten Garcia (31-0, 18 knockouts) previously won the WBC's junior-welterweight (140 pounds) belt after beating Khan by fourth-round knockout in 2012.
Guerrero (33-3-1, 18 KOs) has twice lost when fighting for a welterweight belt -- in 2013 to Mayweather, and last year against World Boxing Assn. "world" champion Keith Thurman.
The Gilroy product has been a featherweight and super-featherweight world champion previously.
The WBC also selected a bout between former world champions Lamont Peterson and Andre Berto as a fight to establish a second mandatory behind Khan, who hasn't fought since May.
Additionally, with Mayweather also leaving the 154-pound division, the WBC selected the Jermell Charlo-John Jackson fight for its vacant super-welterweight belt.
