Feb. 23--South Side gospel-soul legend Mavis Staples stopped by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" Monday to perform not one, not two, but four songs.
Staples, 76, sang "Take Us Back" off her new album "Livin' on a High Note," which dropped last week. Before the performance, Staples sang a few notes of The Staple Singers' "Uncloudy Day" (the first song she sang with her family), a Thanksgiving rhyme (her first song ever) and "Tomorrow," from her new album.
"Mavis," a documentary about Staples and her family, is slated to premiere 8 p.m. Monday on HBO. She's scheduled to perform at Thalia Hall March 19-20.
"The Late Show" airs weeknights on CBS at 10:35 p.m.
