Feb. 13--A warmer final three months of the year helped put a chill on Exelon Corp.'s fourth-quarter earnings.
The Chicago-based energy company reported Friday it earned $18 million, or 2 cents a share, during the fourth quarter, compared with $495 million, or 58 cents a share in 2013's final three months.
Its ComEd business earned $73 million during the quarter, compared with $109 million a year ago. Affecting the results was a 5.6 percent decrease from a year ago in the number of heating degree-days within its territory.
Other factors that affected the quarterly results were higher expenses tied to its generation unit of owned and contracted electric generating facilities and other ventures. The unit lost $91 million during the quarter, compared with net income of $269 million a year-earlier.
