March 20--Last week, the high school August Wilson Monologue Competition was held at the Goodman Theatre.
300 students from area high schools competed in the preliminary round, 64 students moved to the semi-finals and the 23 students participated in the final round.
The videos above are the monologues of the first, second and third place Chicago winners, all of whom will advance to the national competition in New York in May.
The first place winner is Lawren Carter from Nicholas Senn High School, performing a monologue from "The Piano Lesson." Second place went to Casey Edwards of Chicago High School of the Arts, performing a piece from "Jitney." And third place went to Booker Vance of Kenwood Academy High School, performing a monologue from "Two Trains Running."
