BRIEF: Utility poles on train catch fire twice on Far South Side

Sept. 07--A freight train carrying utility poles caught fire twice overnight on the city's Far South Side.

Fire crews were first called to the area around 93rd Street and St. Lawrence Avenue about 8:45 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report about the burning utility poles. That alarm was struck out by about 9:55 p.m. There was also a hazardous materials response for that fire, authorities said.

A few hours later, about 1:15 a.m., there was another call for a fire. The utility poles had rekindled and crews responded to a train yard in the 2000 block of East 106th Street to put them out a second time.

They finished the second fire about 2:20 a.m. The second fire was called in while the train was moving but it took about a mile for it to stop, according to authorities.
