Defending College Football Playoff champion Ohio State is ranked first, followed by Texas Christian, Alabama, Baylor and Oregon.
Also from the Pac-12, UCLA is ranked 14th, Arizona State 16th, Stanford 21st and Arizona 22nd.
USC, coming off a 9-4 season, was picked to win the Pac-12 in the preseason media poll. Times reporters do not vote in polls.
The Trojans are led by quarterback Cody Kessler. The fifth-year senior passed for 39 touchdowns with five interceptions in 2014.
USC starts training camp Aug. 8. The Trojans open the season Sept. 5 against Arkansas State.
