BRIEF: United could be fined $300,000 for missing washer on 1 wheel

Dec. 31--Chicago-based United Airlines could face a fine of more than $300,000 for allegedly operating a jet without a washer on the axle of a landing gear wheel.

Boeing, the maker of the aircraft in question, and United maintenance manuals warn that the wheel bearing can fail if the washer is not installed.

United flew the jet, which the FAA considers not airworthy, on 35 passenger flights.

The Federal Aviation Administration proposes a $317,500 civil penalty against United because the jet didn't comply with federal regulations.

The FAA claims that on Jan. 19, 2013, United mechanics removed and replaced a nose landing-gear wheel and tire on a Boeing 767 without installing the required axle washer.

An FAA inspector noticed the washer was missing during a routine inspection.

United has asked to meet with the FAA to discuss the case, the agency said.

"Safety is United's top priority," said United spokesman Charles Hobart. "We are reviewing the letter and will cooperate fully with the FAA to resolve their concerns."
