BRIEF: United Airlines announces airport projects

May 13--Chicago-based United Airlines this week announced new airport projects in Houston and Los Angeles.

United on Monday broke ground on the carrier's new Terminal C North concourse at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, United's gateway to Latin American destinations.

The 265,000-square-foot facility cost $244 million. It has 11 passenger boarding gates and can accommodate a mix of United's narrow-, mid- and wide-body aircraft, the airline said. United expects to complete the new Terminal C North concourse in early 2017.

And on Wednesday, United announced plans to renovate its space at Los Angeles International Airport at a cost of more than half a billion dollars. The project includes renovated ticketing and gate areas and a renovated United Club lounge in Terminal 7. It is expected to be complete in December 2017.

In Chicago, United has been resistant to further expansion of O'Hare International Airport, including adding runways and building terminal space, saying passenger demand doesn't warrant it. However, it has recently upgraded its United Club lounges and is in the process of remodeling its gate areas in Terminal 1 at O'Hare.
