March 06--UCLA on Saturday unveiled a monument to Jackie Robinson on its Westwood campus.
Robinson starred at UCLA in football, basketball, baseball and track from 1939 to 1941. He would go on to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball by becoming the first African American to play in the big leagues when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.
The monument, which was dedicated with a ceremony, is a 42-inch bronze "42," the number Robinson wore with the Dodgers.
The statue features a plaque emblazoned with a quote from Robinson: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."
Last year, the Dodgers announced that a statue of Robinson would be unveiled this season at Dodger Stadium.
