BRIEF: UCLA defensive back Ishmael Adams faces misdemeanor battery charge

Oct. 20--UCLA defensive back Ishmael Adams was charged Monday with misdemeanor battery in connection with an August incident in which he was accused of using force to rob an Uber driver of a cellphone.

The charge was filed by the Los Angeles City Attorney's office in Superior Court. Adams is scheduled to be arraigned in November.

Adams was arrested in Westwood during the early morning hours Aug. 30. He was immediately suspended from the team and missed three games.

He was reinstated to the team on Sept. 22 after the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office announced it would not file felony charges in the case, which was referred to the city attorney's office. The redshirt junior, a first-team All-Pac-12 Conference choice last season, has played the last three games for the Bruins.

A misdemeanor battery conviction can carry a fine of up to $2,000 and/or six months in jail. The charge is not expected to affect Adams' status with the team.
