Nov. 20--Jordan Vale's goal early in the second half was all UCLA needed in a 2-0 win over visiting Cal Poly on Thursday, sending the Bruins on to the second round of the NCAA men's soccer playoffs.
In another first-round tournament game, Luis Urias and Carlos Delgadillo scored before the break to lift Santa Clara over Cal State Fullerton, 3-0. The Titans, champions of the Big West Conference, finished 13-8-1.
Vale, a senior midfielder from New Zealand and one of nine UCLA players to earn all-conference honors, gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute. UCLA added an insurance score 18 minutes later on an own goal.
UCLA will meet Western Athletic Conference champion Seattle (17-3-1) on Sunday. The Bruins (11-8-1 and second in the Pac-12 this year) reached the NCAA final last season.
In the women's tournament, which enters the second round Friday, USC (14-5-2) will play Princeton in Charlottesville, Va., and Loyola Marymount (14-5-1) will meet Minnesota in Morgantown, W.Va.
