BRIEF: UC clinics in Southern California to remain open amid doctors strike

April 12--The student health centers at five University of California campuses in Southern California, where unionized doctors are on strike over contract negotiations, will be open on Monday, according to university officials.

The health professionals walked out of the health clinics at UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday as part of a rolling strike that began last Thursday in Northern and Central California.

Union members say the strike is in protest of the UC administration's refusal to provide financial information that they need to negotiate contracts and bolster health center resources.

UC officials have expressed disappointment over the strike, which they say has a negative effect on students and does not resolve the labor dispute.

The Union of American Physicians and Dentists, which represents doctors and dentists at UC student health centers, plans to picket at the UCLA campus on Monday, during the university's "Bruin Day" open house event.

The strike is scheduled to end Wednesday.
