BRIEF: Uber settles wrongful-death lawsuit in San Francisco

July 15--On-demand transportation company Uber has settled a lawsuit brought by the family of Sofia Liu, a 6-year-old who was run over and killed by an Uber driver in San Francisco on New Year's Eve in 2013.

"The Lius suffered a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to them," an Uber spokeswoman said in a statement. "While we cannot ease their pain, we do hope this settlement helps the family move forward."

The settlement amount was not revealed, and the Liu family filed Monday to keep the terms of the agreement confidential, citing the privacy of Sofia' brother, Anthony, a minor who was injured in the incident.

The attorney for the Liu family did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Sofia, her brother and their mother were in a crosswalk when they were hit. The driver was logged into the Uber app at the time of the accident but was not transporting passengers.

Attorney Chris Dolan brought a wrongful-death lawsuit against Uber on behalf of the Liu family in San Francisco County Superior Court, alleging several counts of negligence.
