BRIEF: Tyson recalls beef for possible E. coli contamination

Nov. 25--Tyson Foods is recalling about 16,000 pounds of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli, an agency of the USDA said Wednesday.

The 80 percent lean ground beef in 5-pound packages was produced on May 16. They have a "best before or freeze by" date of June 5. The packages were shipped to one distribution center in New York.

No illnesses have been reported, but the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service said it is concerned that consumers may still have some of the beef at home.

E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps two to eight days after exposure.
