5 wounded in city shootings

March 15--At least five people were wounded Saturday in shootings on the city's South and West sides.

The latest shooting happened in the 4600 block of West Erie Street in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

About 7:10 p.m., a 19-year-old man walked into West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park with a gunshot wound to his right arm, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Further details surrounding the shooting were not available.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., two men were shot near the 5000 block of South Aberdeen Street in the city's Back of the Yards neighborhood, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

According to preliminary information, a 30-year-old man suffered wounds to his leg, buttocks and abdomen. He was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital. An 18-year-old man was shot in his ankle. He was also taken to Stroger, where he was listed as being in good condition, Zala said.

Police said the two were approached by a gunman who opened fire and fled on foot.

About 1:10 p.m., a 25-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting in Chatham.

The man was standing outside in the 9200 block of South Langley Avenue when someone inside a passing black, four-door vehicle fired shots, said Officer Hector Alfaro.

The man was hit in his leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where his condition stabilized. Police said the man has documented gang ties and believe the shooting is gang-related.

Earlier, a 23-year-old man was shot in the 6900 block of South Peoria Street about 11:30 a.m. in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.

The man was on the street when two men or boys came out of a gangway across the street and opened fire on the man, hitting him in the left hip, said Officer Veejay Zala. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was in good condition. He was uncooperative with investigators.

No one was in custody in the attacks, and police were investigating.
