BRIEF: Two people and dog escape fiery boat near Leo Carrillo State Beach

May 17--Two people and a dog escaped a boat fire that erupted Tuesday morning in the waters off Leo Carrillo State Beach, officials said.

The blaze started around 7:30 a.m. about six miles offshore from Decker Canyon, said Lidia Barillas, a spokeswoman for the L.A. County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division.

Two people and a dog aboard the 45-foot boat were rescued by a private vessel that was passing through the area and helped out, she said. The Ventura County Fire Department reported the boaters and their dog were taken to the Channel Islands Harbor.

Lifeguard and fire boats from the Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange County Fire Department were headed to the area. The U.S. Coast Guard was also en route.

It is unclear what sparked the morning fire.
