BRIEF: Two killed in collision that spills 20 tons of lemons on Highway 126 near Castaic

Feb. 23--Highway 126 near Castaic was shut down Tuesday after two motorists were killed in a collision between a passenger car and two big rigs that also spilled 40,000 pounds of lemons onto the roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It is unclear when the freeway will reopen, but all five lanes in east and westbound directions have been closed since about 9:30 a.m., CHP Officer Peter Bishop said.

The collision was reported about 9:27 a.m. near Chiquito Canyon Road in Val Verde between Castaic and Fillmore.

According to the CHP traffic logs, the two big rigs collided with a passenger vehicle. One of the rigs was hauling the citrus.

Investigators at the scene were still looking into what sparked the collision. Crews were working to remove the lemons from the roadway.
