March 27--Two people were killed and five others injured in a hit-and-run crash Saturday in South Gate, prompting police to shut down a section of Garfield Avenue as they investigated.
The two-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 4:30 p.m. at Garfield Avenue and El Paseo Street. One vehicle struck the other, which then slammed into a pole, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Richard Licon said.
Among the survivors, three suffered critical injuries and were taken to a local trauma center, and two had minor injuries, Licon said.
The crash area is being treated as a crime scene by the South Gate Police Department because the collision involved a hit-and-run, Licon said. Police could not be reached for comment.
The northbound lanes of Garfield Avenue were shut down, from Firestone Boulevard northward. It was unknown how long the lanes will be closed.
