BRIEF: Two former San Diego police officers plead guilty to drug sales

Nov. 20--REPORTING FROM SAN DIEGO -- Two former San Diego police officers -- a married couple -- pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing and selling prescription drugs while on duty.

Jennifer Charpentier, 41, and Bryce Charpentier, 32, face prison sentences of up to seven years, eight months when sentenced Jan. 30 in San Diego County Superior Court.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Matthew Tag told reporters that the Charpentiers' conduct represents "a complete betrayal of the law enforcement community and I expect them to think about it in state prison."

Bryce Charpentier was a six-year veteran of the police department. Jennifer Charpentier was an 18-year veteran.

They admitted stealing and selling prescription painkillers, including hydrocodone.

Both were suspended after being arrested in June. Hours after the guilty pleas were entered, Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said that, effectively immediately, both are no longer with the department.

"Both of these individuals will have to face the consequences of their actions, which have diminished the great work our officers do every day to serve our city," Zimmerman said.
