BRIEF: Truck hits bridge near Metra's BNSF line, causing up to 45-minute delays

Dec. 18--Metra trains on the Burlington North Santa Fe line were running up to 45 minutes behind schedule Thursday evening after a truck struck a bridge near Kedzie Avenue, officials said.

Earlier Thursday, a truck hit a bridge near Kedzie, causing an obstruction. According to Metra's website, the incident led to a disruption of service and overcrowding at Union Station.

Metra initiated its overcrowding prevention plan, asking passengers to go to the staging area before trying to board trains. SouthWest Service and Heritage Corridor passengers should enter the South Concourse through the hallway connecting the south and north concourses to the Amtrak ticket area, according to the website.

Passengers are asked to listen to announcements for updated information, and to follow the directions from Metra, BNSF and Amtrak personnel.

As of 5:50 p.m., all outbound and inbound trains were running about 15 to 45 minutes behind schedule, officials said.

An extra outbound train was scheduled to accommodate passengers from the Congress Park station to Aurora.
