Nov. 08--The Chicago Tribune has won a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award for "Kenwood's Journey," which was honored Saturday night during the 57th annual presentation.
"Kenwood's Journey" was cited as outstanding cultural documentary. The film -- produced by John Owens, Zbigniew Bzdak and Howard Reich -- was inspired by Reich and Bzdak's 2014 Tribune series of the same name.
The project chronicled the long journey of the Kenwood Academy Jazz Band from its South Side home to the stage of Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center. Less than two weeks before the band was to play the world premiere of a work by noted jazz pianist-composer Jason Moran, 15-year-old band guitarist Aaron Rushing was killed by gunshot.
