BRIEF: Transient arrested after his mom beaten to death in Rancho Cucamonga yard

May 28--A 23-year-old transient was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of beating his mother to death in her backyard after an argument in Rancho Cucamonga.

Angel Leytte is being held without bail on suspicion of murder and is due in court Friday after his mother, Xochilt Escobar, 42, was killed at her home in the 9700 block of Cerise Street, San Bernardino County sheriff's officials said.

Someone inside the home called police and reported the attack, saying Leytte had walked off. Deputies found him at a nearby Jack in the Box and arrested him. Escobar was pronounced dead at her home.

Leytte had gone to the home to visit Escobar, said sheriff's department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman. But authorities say they do not know why the visit turned violent.

San Bernardino County court records show Leytte has convictions for drug offenses but no violent offenses.
