BRIEF: Trains running again after fire in Lincoln Park

Nov. 18--An extra-alarm fire at a shuttered elementary school in Lincoln Park disrupted trains on the CTA's Brown and Purple lines all morning Tuesday.

Fire crews were called shortly after 1 a.m. to the former Mulligan School building in the 1800 block of North Sheffield Avenue.

The CTA halted Purple Line Express service between Howard and the Loop, a suspended service on the Brown Line between Fullerton and Merchandise Mart stops because of the fire. As of 4:15 p.m., Brown Line trains had resumed normal service. Earlier Tuesday afternoon, trains were operating with significant delays, according to the CTA.

There was no indication that the fire damaged the tracks, but crews were working to remove ice from the water used to put out the fire.

For CTA updates, check the transit agency's website.

The former school building was under renovation when the fire broke out, according to fire officials and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development. The building, which was built in 1889, had been granted landmark status last February.

After being shuttered for several years, a Buffalo Grove company bought it for $4 million with plans to convert it into 24 apartments.
