BRIEF: Train hits school bus in North Dakota, killing 2

Jan. 05--A train crashed into a school bus in eastern North Dakota on Monday afternoon, killing two people and injuring several others, officials said.

A 17-year-old student and the 62-year-old driver were ejected from the bus and sustained fatal injuries when the BNSF Railway train hit the Larimore Public Schools bus about 3:45 p.m. Central time, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred about half a mile east of the city of Larimore, Highway Patrol Lt. Tom Iverson said. The bus was going north on a gravel road, crossing the tracks, when it was hit by a westbound train, he said, adding that the bus was struck near the passenger-side doors.

In addition to the fatalities, numerous students were injured, Iverson said.

BNSF personnel are at the scene and working with law enforcement, company spokeswoman Amy McBeth told The Times. "We'll be conducting a full investigation into this."
