BRIEF: Trade in your gun, receive a gift card in L.A.

May 09--As part of the city's gun buyback program, Angelenos can anonymously trade in their firearms Saturday in exchange for up to $200 in a grocery store gift card.

Handguns, shotguns and rifles will draw up to $100 in a Ralph's gift card while card supplies last, and assault weapons will be worth up to $200, officials said.

Authorities will collect guns until 2 p.m. at the parking lot at 2379 W. Washington Blvd. in West Los Angeles and at the Masonic Temple, 14750 Sherman Way, Van Nuys.

The weapons should arrive unloaded and left in the trunk of a vehicle, officials said.

The gun buyback is part of Mayor Eric Garcetti's Gang Reduction and Youth Development Office.

According to city officials, approximately 13,700 guns have been turned in since the buyback initiative started in 2009. At the last buyback in December, police collected 775 firearms, including 41 assault weapons.
