BRIEF: Tiger Woods to open 2015 with Waste Management Phoenix Open

Jan. 09--Tiger Woods is back.

The former No. 1 golfer has committed to playing in the Waste Management Phoenix Open Jan. 29-Feb. 1 at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona and will also take part in the Famers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines the following week.

Woods underwent back surgery last year and made just nine total starts.

"It will be great to return to Phoenix," Woods said in a statement on his website announcing his upcoming schedule. "The crowds are amazing and always enthusiastic, and the 16th hole is pretty unique in golf."

The 14-time major winner hasn't played at the Phoenix Open since 2001. He's played the tournament three times, finishing third in 1999 and tied for fifth in 2001.

In 2000, Woods had a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole.

At Torrey Pines, Woods has claimed the top overall prize seven times, the last coming in 2013. Woods' last tournament win came the same year at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

"Torrey is a very important place to me. My pop took me there when I was younger, and I have a lot of special memories of watching the TOUR play there when I was growing up," Woods said.
