9 wounded in city shootings

May 12--Nine people have been wounded in separate shootings on the South and West sides since Monday afternoon, according to police.

Most recently, a 62-year-old man was wounded and a CTA bus was damaged in a shooting around 5:05 a.m. Tuesday in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.

The man was standing at a bus stop in the 700 block of West 111th Street when somebody tried to rob him, police said. According to authorities, the man did not want to give up his property, and the attackers shot at him from the south side of 111th.

The man had a graze wound to the shoulder and was taken to Roseland Community Hospital in good condition, police said.

A passing CTA bus apparently got in the middle of the shooting and was damaged. Police said nobody on the bus was injured. A bus stop shelter where the man was standing was also shattered by gunfire, police said.

Across the street from the stop, officers found at least six shell casings and cordoned off the area with yellow police tape.

The damaged bus was parked, with emergency lights flashing, about a block east of where the shooting happened.

Police said video surveillance of the street was available, but the attackers were wearing hoodies that covered their faces.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting early Tuesday.

Around 1 a.m. Tuesday, a 20-year-old man was in critical condition after being wounded in a gang-related shooting in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Ronald Gaines, Chicago Police Department spokesman. The man was shot in the head in the 2500 block of South Halsted Street, Gaines said, citing preliminary information. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, Gaines said.

Around 11:40 p.m. Monday, a 34-year-old man was wounded in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Gaines said. The man was walking in the 1500 block of West 60th Street when someone in a red van fired shots. The van fled northbound, Gaines said. The man was struck in the hip and arm and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Gaines said.

Around 10:25 p.m. Monday, a 25-year-old man was in critical condition after being shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side, Gaines said. The man was driving in a car with a passenger in the 500 block of North Kedzie Avenue when they heard gunshots. The man realized he was shot and was driven to Norwegian American Hospital, Gaines said. The man, with a wound to the upper back, was then transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Around 10:05 p.m. Monday, a 22-year-old man was wounded in the North Austin neighborhood on the West Side, said Officer Amina Greer, a police spokeswoman. The man was sitting in a vehicle in the 1600 block of North Mayfield Avenue when he heard gunshots, Greer said; he came out of the vehicle and realized he had been shot in the buttocks. Someone drove him to West Suburban Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Greer said.

Around 8:35 p.m., an 18-year-old man was wounded in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side, police said. The man was walking in the 1700 block of East 71st Street when someone exited a nearby dark-colored sedan and fired shots. The gunman got back in the car and fled northbound, police said. The 18-year-old had several gunshot wounds to the body and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said. His condition stabilized, according to police. No one was in custody.

About 4:15 p.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, a 34-year-old man was shot in the 4700 block of South Ada Street, police said. The man was in his vehicle when someone pulled up to him, and during a verbal exchange, the attacker took out a handgun and fired shots, Greer said. The man was hit in the left shoulder before fleeing; he then notified police about the shooting, Greer said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Around 12:20 p.m., another shooting left a man, 20, and a boy, 17, wounded in the South Shore neighborhood. They were both taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to police. Police found them in the 7000 block of South Chappel Avenue. Someone in a passing car fired toward them, hitting the 20-year-old in the chest and leg and the 17-year-old in the buttocks.

Area detectives are investigating.
