BRIEF: Three premieres in Jackalope's new season

June 09--Three new plays will make up Jackalope Theatre Company's 2015-16 season, a spokesman for the company said Tuesday.

First is "The Raid" (Nov. 4-Dec. 12) by Idris Goodwin. Goodwin's play dramatizes the story of John Brown, the Civil War-era abolitionist whose radical aim was to free and arm southern slaves. The production will be directed by Kaiser Ahmed.

Next is a drama by Calamity West called "Rolling" (Feb. 24-April 2). West's play, which appears to have been inspired by the recent Rolling Stone "A Rape on Campus" scandal, is about a young writer who returns to her childhood home after it's revealed that her high-profile story about a sexual assault at a university might be fictitious. Nate Silver directs.

And Ike Holter's new play "Prowess" (May 18-June 25, 2016), to be directed by Marti Lyons, will end the season. Holter's "Exit Strategy" was a big hit for Jackalope in summer 2014. In this new show, a group of young Chicagoans take crime-stopping into their own hands by becoming scrappy superheroes.

Jackalope Theatre Company performs at the Broadway Armory, 5917 N. Broadway, in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood.
