BRIEF: Three men charged in West Side armed robbery

Dec. 29--Three men have been charged in the armed robbery of a person on the Near West Side and then crashing their car a short time later on the Eisenhower Expressway.

About 2:50 a.m. Sunday, officers were flagged down by someone who had just been robbed at gunpoint near South Western Avenue and West Jackson Boulevard, police said.

Police found the vehicle in which the men were riding on Interstate 290 after the driver had crashed into an embankment at Polk Street, according to a police statement. Three men in the car were arrested and charged. No injuries were reported in the robbery or crash, police said.

Devont Merrill, 21, of Country Club Hills, was charged with two felony counts of armed robbery, one misdemeanor count of reckless driving and one misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended license.

William Irving, 21, of the 3600 block of South Lake Park Avenue, and Dequan Brown, 22, of the 900 block of East 92nd Place, were each charged with two counts of felony armed robbery, according to police.

All three men are scheduled to appear in bond court Monday afternoon.
