July 08--All lanes of the southbound 5 Freeway in the City of Commerce were reopened Wednesday afternoon, nearly two days after a fire broke out along a riverbed, snarling traffic on both sides of the busy roadway.
A homeless encampment caught fire Monday about 11:30 p.m. near Slauson Avenue, the California Department of Transportation said. Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the blaze, Dispatch Supervisor Ray Dong said.
A SigAlert was issued for the 5 Freeway at East Slauson shortly before midnight on Monday, the California Highway Patrol said. Photos of the fire revealed damage underneath part of the freeway.
The northbound 5 Freeway reopened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.
