Power restored in Studio City and Sherman Oaks after equipment failure

April 08--Power was fully restored Thursday to thousands of customers in Studio City and Sherman Oaks whose service was affected by equipment failure at an electrical substation.

About 8,700 customers were affected by the outage, which began about 9 p.m. Wednesday, said Vonda Paige, spokeswoman for the Department of Water and Power.

Power was restored to 3,700 customers around 5 a.m. Thursday, according to a tweet from the agency. All customers had their power restored by 5:45 p.m., according to the utility.

Northbound lanes of Coldwater Canyon Boulevard in Studio City were closed for much of the day as crews worked to restore power.

Around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, power at a substation in the 4200 block of Coldwater Canyon Avenue was interrupted, causing the outage, the DWP said in a news release. Crews responded to investigate a possible equipment explosion, as reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The LAFD restricted access to the area initially because of the possibility of hot industrial oil and potentially hazardous conditions, the DWP said. Afterward, crews were allowed to enter only in full hazardous material suits.

As of Thursday morning, crews had identified a piece of equipment called a feeder regulator as having failed, spraying oil and other material throughout the room and adjacent areas, officials said.

Hazardous conditions slowed workers' progress in restoring power, the DWP said.
