BRIEF: Thousands of flights canceled or delayed as East Coast snowstorm brews

Jan. 22--Thousands of airline flights have been canceled or delayed as a powerful snowstorm heads for the East Coast.

As of 12:55 p.m., airlines had canceled 2,933 Friday flights within, into or out of the U.S. and delayed 1,962, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware. The site also showed 3,529 Saturday flights within, into or out of the U.S. were canceled.

Los Angeles International Airport had 78 cancellations for Friday and 63 cancellations for Saturday, as well as 81 delayed flights Friday, according to FlightAware.

The storm is expected to affect large swaths of the East Coast, stretching from the southern Appalachians through the mid-Atlantic states, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The storm could dump one to two feet of snow from eastern Kentucky to New Jersey, and more than two feet in portions of the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic states, including the Washington and Baltimore areas, NOAA said.
