May 18--A third suspect arrested this week in the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Tyshawn Lee does not have the "mental facilities and resources" to have planned the killing, his attorney told a judge Wednesday.
Kevin Edwards, 20, attended special education classes in Chicago Public Schools, the attorney told Judge James Brown.
The judge denied bail for Edwards, who appeared in court wearing a gray hooded Bears sweatshirt and pajama pants.
"This is a case that has shocked the city to its core," Brown said. "It's even shocked the nation that a 9-year-old boy could be executed while playing basketball because he was related to a gang member."
Edwards was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Danville, according to the Vermilion County sheriff's office. He was a passenger in a car that was stopped by a deputy sheriff, the office said. He ran off but was arrested about a block away.
He initially gave a false name "but gave his true identity after arriving at the Vermilion County Jail," said Capt. Michael Hartshorn, chief investigator for the sheriff's office.
Edwards is the third person to be charged in the Nov. 2 execution-style slaying of Tyshawn. The others are Dwright Boone-Doty, 22, and Corey Morgan, 27.
Edwards is accused of driving the other two to a park where Tyshawn was playing. They allegedly lured him to a alley near his grandmother's home and shot him.
Police have said Tyshawn was targeted because of his father's gang ties and a recent series of shootings between two rival gangs in the Auburn Gresham community.
