BRIEF: 'The Ben Hecht Show' to play Chicago summer 2016

Feb. 05--"The Ben Hecht Show" will premiere in Chicago in the summer of 2016, Grippo Stage Company announced Friday.

Written and performed by James Sherman with direction by Dennis Zacek, the play about the life of the Chicago journalist turned literary renaissance man will open June 10 and run through July 17 at Piven Theatre.

The one-man show is based on Hecht's memoirs "A Guide for the Bedevilled" and "A Child of the Century," both concering Jewish identity and anti-Semitism.

Zacek, who served as artistic director of Victory Gardens Theatre for 34 years, has directed the world premieres of 14 of Sherman's plays.

Piven Theatre is located at Noyes Cultural Center, 927 Noyes St. in Evanston.
