BRIEF: Thailand: Tour lets visitors interact with elephants

Feb. 04--Isan Explorer, based in Thailand's little-known northeast region, is offering two-, three- and four-day tours that give travelers the opportunity to interact with elephants in their natural environment.

The excursions depart from and return to Khon Kaen, with a full day spent walking with and watching the elephants in the forest and at watering holes. Participants can even help bathe the elephants in the Mun River.

Isan worked with the Save Elephant Foundation to ensure that its tours are responsible: There are no chair rides or circus tricks, and the elephants are off-chain. The tours also feature visits to Buddhist temples, Khmer ruins and a village known for its silk weaving.

Dates: Available year-round

Price: From $662 for a two-day tour to $1,227 for four-day tours, based on the number of participants and type of accommodation. Includes accommodations, some meals, sightseeing and activities, entrance fees and English-speaking local guides. Does not include transportation to Khon Kaen or international airfare.
