BRIEF: Teen charged with pointing gun at cops just after West Side shooting

July 20--A 16-year-old boy has been charged with pointing a gun at police officers just after a nearby shooting on the West Side early Saturday, police said.

The boy, who prosecutors say is charged as a juvenile, was arrested in the 1100 block of North St. Louis Avenue shortly after a police officer fired at him about 1:05 a.m. Saturday, police said. A 25-year-old man had just been killed and an 18-year-old man wounded nearby in the 3500 block of West Grenshaw Street.

Officers were flagged down by a person who said someone was shooting on Grenshaw. When officers got to St. Louis Avenue, they saw a male with a gun, police said in a news release. The boy ran east on Grenshaw, and the officers chased him on foot.

During the chase, the boy turned toward the officers with a gun in his hand, and one of the officers fired at him but failed to hit him, police said. The boy was arrested in the alley in the 3500 block of West Grenshaw, and police confiscated a handgun.

Court information was not immediately available for the boy, but a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office said he would at least initially have been charged as a juvenile.
