BRIEF: T-Mobile expands coverage in Chicago area

May 25--In an effort to catch up with archrivals Verizon and AT, T-Mobile said it is expanding coverage in the Chicago area.

The wireless carrier said Wednesday it is acquiring spectrum to deliver its extended range coverage to 10.9 million people in the Chicago metro area. The spectrum will be acquired from Leap Licenseco, an AT subsidiary. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year and financial details were not disclosed.

The new coverage in the low frequency 700 MHz spectrum will help customers download and upload faster, and is aimed at stemming dropped calls and shaky video streaming, T-Mobile said.

The additional spectrum will cover Illinois areas including Chicago, Elgin, Joliet, Waukegan, Evanston, Naperville, Aurora, Rockford, DeKalb, Bloomington, Normal and Kankakee; Gary in Indiana; and Kenosha and Janesville in Wisconsin.
