BRIEF: Suspect in Santa Monica standoff expected to face murder charge

Feb. 22--A man who barricaded himself in a Santa Monica apartment in a nearly five-hour standoff with a Los Angeles County sheriff's special weapons team faces a possible murder charge and is being held on $1-million bail, officials said Sunday.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials have identified the man as 28-year-old David Carrillo, who was wanted in connection with a murder in South L.A. this month, according to a statement from the department. Sheriff's officials haven't released the victim's name.

Carrillo barricaded himself in an apartment in the 800 block of Ocean Park Boulevard about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, forcing residents in the neighborhood to evacuate their homes, authorities said. The sheriff's SWAT team was dispatched and the standoff lasted until about 5 p.m., when authorities fired tear gas and sent canines into the apartment unit.

Carrillo is due in court Tuesday, according to jail records.
