BRIEF: Summer snowstorm hits California's Eastern Sierra

July 10--Mono County tourism officials created some buzz after they posted a short video on their Facebook account Thursday, showing snow in the Tioga Pass in the eastern Sierra Nevada.

The surprising snowfall in mid-July was the result of a persistent weather system that has been slowly moving over eastern California and western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

The system has created thunderstorms in the region over the past few days with heavy rain and snowfall prompting flash flood warnings and leading to the closure of state Highway 120 for several hours Wednesday, according to CalTrans.

Forecasters say more showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late Friday morning and continue through the afternoon in the Eastern Sierra. The storm may produce heavy rainfall and hail at times.
