More subzero wind chills today, maybe 40s by Thursday

Jan. 12--Another surge of arctic air hit Chicago on Tuesday morning, with wind gusts of 35 mph whipping up the 2 to 3 inches of snow that fell overnight.

For the second straight morning, the wind chill at O'Hare International Airport was in the minus teens, according to the National Weather Service. Some of the worst wind chills in the area included minus 21 in Mundelein, minus 20 in Harvard, minus 19 in Kenosha, minus 18 in Crystal Lake and minus 17 in Aurora.

The front followed a band of snow that dropped 3.2 inches at O'Hare, 3.1 inches at Midway Airport and 2.5 inches in Romeoville, the weather service said.

Temperatures were expected to peak in the high single digits or low teens Tuesday, according to Casey Sullivan, a meteorologist with the weather service.

"We'll be holding steady in the high single digits, low teens ... and then temperatures will drop into the low single digits tonight," he said.

For the second straight day, problems with track switches hampered service on Metra's Union Pacific North Line. According to the commuter rail agency's website, train 315, scheduled to arrive in Waukegan at 8:51 a.m., was stopped near Clybourn Avenue because of switch problems. The duration of that delay was unknown.

Train 317, scheduled to arrive in Highland Park at 8:44 a.m., was scheduled to be operating ahead of train 315 during the delay. Commuters were advised to listen to platform announcements for the location of the train.

Switch problems were also hindering service on the Milwaukee District North Line. Train 2103, scheduled to arrive in Fox Lake at 8:36 a.m., was operating 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule because of earlier switch problems, according to Metra's website.

The chill will ease Wednesday, when temperatures are to rebound to about 20 under partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Some flurries or light snow is possible in the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures could be in the 40s by Thursday and Friday, the weather service said.
