BRIEF: Sterigenics plans $10 million Gurnee expansion

Aug. 27--Deerfield-based Sterigenics International, which provides sterilization services for medical-device manufacturers, plans to invest $10 million to expand a facility in suburban Gurnee.

The company uses different methods, including gamma radiation, to decontaminate medical products. Sterigenics said it plans to add a new gamma cell to the Gurnee facility.

Sterigenics said increasing customer demand is driving the expansion. The global sterilization market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 7.6 percent over the next five years, according to research firm Markets and Markets. Hospitals, clinics and device makers are facing intense regulatory scrutiny after recent high-profile superbug outbreaks from tainted medical scopes.

Earlier this year, Sterigenics, a major player in the sterilization market, reorganized its capital structure when private equity firm Warburg Pincus acquired a significant equity interest in the company from GTCR, a Chicago-based private equity firm. GTCR acquired Sterigenics in 2011 in a $675 million deal.

A company spokesman said the additional capacity in Gurnee will mean new jobs but could not say how many.
