BRIEF: State: Wheaton man accused of luring, child abduction

March 12--Bail was set at $150,000 Saturday for a Wheaton man accused of offering alcohol to several children if they would come home with him, authorities said.

Javier Lopez, 47, of the 2000 block of West Roosevelt Road, appeared before DuPage County Judge Paul Marchese, who set the bail, according to the state's attorney's office.

Lopez is charged with two counts of luring and one count of child abduction, both felonies.

Lopez on Thursday evening allegedly approached several children ranging in age from 7 to 15 who were playing basketball in an apartment complex where he lives, according to the state's attorney's office.

He offered the children alcohol if they would return to his apartment with him, and they refused and alerted an adult, a statement from the state's attorney's office said.

Lopez stayed nearby and a short time later, police got to the scene and he was arrested.

Lopez's next court appearance is scheduled for Mar. 22, and he is slated for arraignment April 1.
