BRIEF: St. Charles Kohl's among 18 stores slated to close

March 17--A St. Charles Kohl's store is one of 18 the retailer plans to close by June 19.

Kohl's announced in February that it would be closing 18 underperforming stores that account for less than 1 percent of the retailer's overall sales.

In addition to the Kohl's at 3840 E. Main St. in St. Charles, nine California stores and locations in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey and Wisconsin are slated to close. The retailer has 1,164 stores.

Kohl's said it is experimenting with new smaller-format stores to try to boost sales. It plans to pilot them in seven new locations, two of which opened earlier this year, said spokeswoman Melanie Hochschild.

It's also adding discount stores, with two new Off/Aisle stores in Wisconsin and 12 new Fila stores, which will be the retailer's first outlet stores, Kohl's said Wednesday.
