BRIEF: Spike Lee hosts 'Chi-Raq' screening for San Antonio Spurs

Feb. 01--Days before "Chi-Raq" is set to land on Amazon Prime, "Chi-Raq" director Spike Lee held a special screening of the film for the San Antonio Spurs.

Lee said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who grew up in Merrillville, asked him to show the movie Friday in Cleveland ahead of Saturday's Spurs-Cavaliers game, which the Cavaliers won 117-103.

The film, a fictional look at a South Side community's response after a young girl is shot to death, earned mixed reaction from the Spurs, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Forward David West gave the film a tepid review while forward Kawhi Leonard said he liked it.

"It was very educational," Leonard told the Express-News, "just learning about what's really going on in the United States with gun violence."

"Chi-Raq," released in some theaters Dec. 4, earned $2.6 million at the box office, according to box office tracker Box Office Mojo. The film, which is available on demand, is set to debut on Amazon Prime Friday.
