BRIEF: Spike Lee film holding casting call in Chicago

May 04--Spike Lee needs extras for his new Chicago-based film, and it doesn't sound like the "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X" director is too picky.

There will be a casting call for the Amazon Studios film, which is using the working title "Chiraq," from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday at St. Sabina Academy in the Gresham neighborhood, according to a post on 4 Star Casting's Facebook page for the film. The page said the movie could film May 19-July 10 and needs stand-ins and hundreds of extras of all ethnicities who are 7 to 75 years old, male or female.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently said Lee told him that the film would center on black-on-black violence in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. Emanuel said he made it clear to Lee that he didn't approve of the "Chiraq" title -- a controversial nickname which that to the city's reputation for violence -- but he did not say whether Lee was considering changing it.

Interestingly enough, 4 Star Casting's Facebook page for the film is called Extras4ChiTruth and does not refer to the film as "Chiraq."
