BRIEF: Southern California legislators support L.A. bid for 2024 Olympics

Nov. 14--Southern California legislators have sent a letter to the U.S. Olympic Committee voicing their support for Los Angeles' bid to host the 2024 Summer Games.

The USOC is expected to decide in the coming months whether to submit an American bid and, if so, to select from four finalists.

Boston, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., have been included on the short list with Los Angeles.

Four local members of Congress -- Xavier Becerra, Julia Brownley, Tony Cardenas and Judy Chu -- characterized Los Angeles as a "vibrant and diverse city that embodies the highest ideals of the Olympic spirit."

Hosting the Games continues to be a hot-button issue in many places because of the expense involved. Several potential international candidates recently withdrew from the running for the 2022 Winter Games.

In Los Angeles, organizers have proposed to make use of existing venues but also to construct new facilities such as an athlete's village near downtown.

The USOC has attempted to streamline costs with a more informal type of domestic bidding process.
