Sept. 08--One man was fatally stabbed and five other people were injured in shootings during Labor Day violence in Chicago, police said.
A 56-year-old man was pronounced dead after a physical altercation with another person in the 800 block of East 81st Street, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
The man was identified as Derrick Simpson of the 800 block of East 81st Street. He was pronounced dead at 12:16 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
After the altercation broke out at 11:34 a.m. in the East Chatham neighborhood, the other person produced a knife and stabbed Simpson in the chest, police said. Simpson was hospitalized in critical condition but later died, police said. A person of interest is in custody, police said.
At 3:07 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was injured after being shot in the 11300 block of South Throop Street in the Morgan Park neighborhood, Trainor said. The teen was shot in the right leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and his condition stabilized, Trainor said.
At 2:45 p.m., a 34-year-old man was injured after being shot in the 2500 block of West 71st Street in the Marquette Park neighborhood, Trainor said.
The man was shot in the right leg and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Trainor said.
Earlier a 45-year-old woman was injured after being shot at 11:45 a.m. in the 2000 block of East 71st Street in the South Shore neighborhood, said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
The victim was shot in the right hip and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition had stabilized.
A man was shot at 10:30 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Carpenter Street in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman citing preliminary information.
The 27-year-old man was wounded in the chest and taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, Sedevic said.
At 9 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot in the 5600 block of South Wells Street in the Englewood neighborhood, police said.
The man was shot in both feet and managed to get himself to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was in good condition, police said.
