Prosecutors: Man fatally shot girlfriend's uncle after fight that gave her nosebleed

Feb. 13--A South Side man was ordered held on $400,000 after being accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend's uncle after he gave her a nosebleed during a fight.

Monte T. Williams, 31, of the 9700 block of South Brennan Avenue, was charged Thursday morning with aggravated battery with the use of a deadly weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and possession and use of a firearm, police said

Prosecutors said the shooting happened Aug. 31, 2014, just after 9 p.m. on the 9500 block of South Olgesby Avenue in the city's Jeffery Manor neighborhood.

Antoine Stewart, 51, was at a family barbecue when he got into an argument with his niece, who is Williams' girlfriend and the mother of Williams' children. The argument became physical when the two started pushing each other. At one point, the niece fell and suffered a bloody nose, said prosecutors.

The niece told one of her children to call Williams and tell him that her uncle made her bleed, according to prosecutors.

Shortly after, Williams arrived at the barbecue with a handgun. He cocked the handgun while walking up to the second floor of the residence where Stewart was in a room. He then struck Stewart in the head with the gun, said prosecutors.

A person inside of the residence ordered Williams to leave the house, so he left and went to his car. Williams then told another person at the barbecue to put his children in the car while he stood by the car door. Stewart then left the residence with his niece behind him, according to prosecutors.

Williams then shot Stewart multiple times and his girlfriend was struck in the arm.

Five days later, Stewart, of the Oglesby address, was pronounced dead at 1:55 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. An autopsy revealed Stewart died of multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Williams' attorney argued the shooting was in self defense, but Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held in lieu of a $400,000 bail.
